Struisbaai is a town in the Boland & Overberg region of South Africa's Western Cape province only two hours from Cape Town. Struisbaai and is only 4 kilometers from the southernmost point of the African continent at Cape Agulhas. Struisbaai is ideal for fishing, swimming, shell collecting, sunbathing or simply relaxing and the coast is also home to several old shipwrecks, including those of the Zoetendal, Birkenhead and Arniston.

The village's quaint homes showcase the historical architectural heritage of Struisbaai, the rustic fishermen’s cottage, which is typically characterized by whitewashed exteriors, traditional green wooden shutters and square chimneys that ascend above the beautiful thatch roofs.

There are many shell shops in Struisbaai and the restored thatch-roof Anglican Church is a national monument and well worth a visit. The Aghulhas lighthouse is a popular attraction and is the second oldest working lighthouse in South Africa.

There is some debate as to the origin of the name Struisbaai. Some authorities believe that it means “straw bay”, referring to the thatch roofs of the fishermen’s cottages here. Others claim the name Struisbaai is derived from the Dutch “vogelstruijs” or “ostrich.” According to legend, Struisbaai is named for the size of its beach - an old Dutch word for "huge".
